Screaming Females = Sleater Kinney????

As SadBear lore goes, we've all fell in love with every single rock move perpetuated by Sleater-Kinney in this video. I still can't get enough.

But I think I've found a new musical crush/rock goddess/all-around badass to admire: Marissa Paternoster of the Screaming Females. She has made the best rock album of the year. Seriously.

Observe:

My pick to click: 10:30 in. Also, the solo beginning at 17:25

No offense to the dudes in the band, but the camera guy spends way too much time on them - which isn't even that much. I just can't get enough of Paternoster. She's tiny and attacks that fretboard like it murdered her best friend, but then she remembers she also has to sing and her words (physically and figuratively) engulf the mic.

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and order you to buy this album. I don't think I can be friends with someone who dislikes this band (even being an acquaintance would be tough).

Sad to see that I missed something so rock 'n' roll in my city. However, I wouldn't rank this above S-K. Couple reasons: Carrie's guitar playing is way more interesting and her rock moves are full-body. Marissa, meanwhile, is just a tad too classic rock for me.

I don't think I'd rank them above S-K either. But I was thinking it was something of a torch-passing.

I appreciate anything similar to Sleater-Kinney, but without vocals similar to Corin Tucker's, it falls short. I'm still looking for some other rock album like One Beat. When I find it, it will be my favorite rock album of the past several years.

Tony, it is. I really only need five or six best albums. I just listen to them over and over. Sleater-Kinney's One Beat is currently in that rotation. I don't see any signs of it leaving.

If I find something else to take their place, I'll be grateful to whomever makes the recommendation.

I understand that I become a fogie exactly when nothing new strikes my fancy. At that point I only hope that the coming generations were as cool as mine, even if I wasn't a cool member. Also, I tend to think about these sorts of things without tense. Everything just happens, right?

I like her voice better, I think. And I'm not just trollin'.

Regardless, my favorite S-K album is still "The Woods." I don't forsee that changing.

Also, Jon, have you heard Wild Flag yet?

I think one of my main criteria for if I will like an album is the question, "Does Janet Weiss play drums on it?"

If "yes," the answer has always been "Of course I will like it!" If "no," I have to use other criteria.

Hence, Wild Flag is awesome.

I'm also a "Woods" guy, but because of Oatess, I'm going to go back to "One Beat" for a really close listen.

Wild Flag, meh.

RE: Wild Flag, the songs Carrie sings are the best ones, but it's still a strong album regardless. Plus, Janet Weiss.

I'm OK with Woods fans. One Beat is my favorite, but in my mind The Woods is effectively its equal.

I think of One Beat and The Woods like I think of Surfer Rosa and Doolittle: I certainly listen to one more often than I listen to the other, but I wouldn't know what to do if I had to choose between them.

Also, I hadn't heard Wild Flag. I might need a recommendation. I listened to the first three songs that came up on google, and, while I didn't really dislike the songs, the vocals sounded like Corin Tucker if she were singing hung over and curled up on a couch.

They only have one album. It's good.

And it's Carrie, not Corrin, in Wild Flag. I guess Corrin has her own band now. The other woman who sings in Wild Flag (Mary Timony) is definitely more annoying.

But "Romance" is their best song.

Also, "Racehorse" and "Future Crimes" are good songs too.

I haven't been impressed by the candidate successor bands.

Maybe it will be like Pet Sounds and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Maybe it will take 32 years for the followers to best their progenitor.
